NATION BRIEFS

Triple murder

New Delhi, April 19: Three members of a family were found murdered in their south-west Delhi home today.

The bodies of Vinod Varma, 57, his wife Puspha, 50, and their daughter-in-law Pooja, 26, were discovered by their neighbours who came to check on them after the couple’s son, Nitin, failed to contact them late last night when he had an accident and was hospitalised. The police are probing if the murders were prompted by a property dispute.

TN price whip

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has taken a series of tough measures to arrest the price rise in essential commodities. The steps include a ban on wholesalers and retailers holding wheat and pulses above a certain limit, fixing a ceiling for rice and cooking oil stock, and direct import of some varieties of pulses and palm oil from Myanmar, Canada and Malaysia.

Sarabjit plea

Islamabad (PTI): Sarabjit Singh, an Indian sentenced to death for alleged involvement in terror attacks in Pakistan, has made a special request to the Pakistan authorities to be allowed to meet his daughter Poonam whom he has never seen. The authorities on Saturday denied media reports that his execution had been postponed for one more month.

Kidney probe

Mumbai (PTI): Police are probing the possible role of doctors in a case where a man’s kidney was allegedly transplanted without his consent. The police have arrested businessman Ashok Desai on charges of acting as a middleman.

Parents’ bail

Mumbai (PTI): The parents of four-month-old Khushi, arrested for abandoning her a few days after she was born, were granted bail on Saturday. The couple had left the baby at a hospital, alleging that the authorities had swapped their baby boy with a girl. However, a DNA test proved them wrong.

Hospital help

Colombo (PTI): India will help construct a 150-bed hospital in Sri Lanka and provide vocational training in rural areas under the two agreements signed between the neighbours.
