Electronic ignition is a must to be able to maintain timing and provide consistent output over high mileage
An ignition system that uses electronic switching devices instead of mechanical contact breaker points to send a spark to the spark plug is called an electronic ignition. There are many types of electronic ignition.
The first type retains the contact breakers for the purpose of triggering, and was found on the earlier upgrades to the Premier Padmini. The second is contactless or breakerless ignition, in which electronic transistors or optical pick-ups are used as a switching device. This is commonly found in modern cars. The third is a capacitor discharge ignition, where energy stored in a capacitor is suddenly released through the coil.
The advantages of the electronic ignition are its ability to maintain timing and give a constant output over high mileage (reducing the need for servicing), and to produce a strong, consistent spark in marginal conditions (weak mixtures, very high revs, fouled plugs). It helps vehicles meet emission regulations and reduces fuel consumption.
