| Love tragedy retold |
|
An eternal tale of love, temptation, deception and separation, Tagore’s immortal dance-drama Shyama has universal appeal and is relevant to our times as well. The story, based on an old Buddhist legend, depicts the passionate love of a court dancer Shyama for the itinerant merchant Vajrasen, and its tragic sequel. To be presented in traditional Bharata Natyam style, this evening’s performance features Bollywood actor Gracy Singh (of Lagaan fame; picture right) in the role of its eponymous heroine, who promises to hold the audience spellbound with her graceful moves and eloquent expressions. Other participants include Manoj Malhotra (as Vajrasen) and Kalamandalam Venkit (as Kotal) in dance; Kavita Krishnamurthy, Srikanto Acharya, Babul Supriyo, Rupankar, Saheb Chattopadhyay and Jayati Chakraborty in songs, and Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Sreela Majumder (narration). Direction: Alokananda Ray. Hosted by Indo Occidental Symbiosis and Juhu Cultural Association (Mumbai).
